about

Pianist and composer Dave Meder presents a new take on his work "Break Points," originally recorded in trio format on the 2019 debut 'Passage'.

This version was recorded as a "bonus track" on the same session as the quartet's upcoming September 2023 release, 'New American Hymnal' - now available for pre-order with exclusive benefits. Read more about the album at www.davemeder.com/preorder

"Break Points" was initially developed as an exercise for a Juilliard composition class led by Dave Douglas, who asked students to construct a piece without relying on chord changes or explicitly notated harmony. In the absence, "Break Points" uses a pair of melodic and rhythmic motifs, spun together in different ways, to give the piece its angular structure and narrative.

The piece would later take on new life as one of the more popular tracks from 'Passage' (2019), even winning an ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award in 2020. In this new quartet configuration, Meder finds yet another new expression, honed through several nights on tour in early 2023 during which "Break Points" became a natural set-closer.
